How Can I Get a Social Security Number?

To work in the United States you need a Social Security Number or a Taxpayer ID.

Who Needs a Social Security Number?

- If you are born in the U.S., you typically receive an SSN at birth.
- If you are not born in the U.S; you'll need to provide proof of your immigration status
to obtain an SSN.

Criteria for Eligibility:

You may qualify for an SSN if you meet one of the following criteria:
- U.S. Citizenship
- Permanent Residency (Green Card)
- Work Permit

How to Apply for an SSN:

1. Obtain your work permit or Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
2. Visit a local Social Security Office with your EAD and another form of identification
(such as your passport from your home country) to apply for an SSN.

Benefits of Having a Social Security Number:

- Eligibility for Insurance, Social Security, and other Benefits.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Serves as a secondary form of identification.

How to Apply for an SSN:

1. Obtain your work permit or Employment Authorization Document (EAD).
2. Visit a local Social Security Office with your EAD and another form of identification
(such as your passport from your home country) to apply for an SSN.

Separate Entity from USCIS and Immigration:

It's important to note that the Social Security Office is a separate entity from USCIS and
immigration authorities. While USCIS handles immigration matters, the Social Security
Office is responsible for issuing SSNs and managing related services.

Removing Restrictive Language:

- If your status in the U.S. is temporary (e.g., work visa or temporary work permit), your
SSN card may include the phrase "Valid with DHS Only." This may require additional
proof of work authorization.
- Once you obtain long-term permission to live in the U.S. (e.g., green card or U.S.
citizenship), you can request a new SSN card without restrictive language.

Changing Your Name on Your SSN Card:

- Marriage, naturalization, or court-ordered name changes may require updating your
SSN card.

- Provide necessary documentation (e.g., marriage certificate, naturalization certificate)
to the Social Security Office for a name change.

**Resources to Review:**
